253 MPH Wind in Australia Bests Mount Washington

Here’s an article that notes that Mount Washington 231 mph wind on April 12, 1934 has been toppled.

The new world record has been set by a gust of 253 mph on Australia’s Barrow Island during Cyclone Olivia in 1996.

Any Highpointer Club member interested in doing a “PowerPoint Highpointing Presentation” should contact Ad/Marketing Committee Chair Bill Deitzer.

Bill, along with his “Better Half” Rosemary, would like to also thank the many Club members for their Highpointing pictures and “Hero Shots.”

So far there are eleven presenters that have volunteered their time to do this.

“Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up!” Challange…

The Challenge…

- The American Foundation for Children with AIDS (AFCA) has two up-coming events they want to challenge Highpointers to be a part of.  The first of afcathese challenges is Climb Up the 50.  In this event, AFCA attempts to get at least 50 climbers on the highest peak in each of their states.  Depending on the state, this can be a huge undertaking for some while for others it may be just a short day hike or drive-up. 

Climb Up the 50is centered around projected dates when a team can summit Denali (highest peak in Alaska), which means climbers and hikers and summit their peak on any day between July 3rd and the 12th.

TN/NC Road Work and GSMNP Birthday…

Tennessee (GSMNP/Clingmans Dome):  A reminder from Highpointer Lee Price in Jamestown NC, US-441 (Newfound Gap Road) repaving between Collins Creek Picnic Area south to the boundary with Cherokee, NC is scheduled for March 16, 2009 through September 2010. 

Weather-related road and facility closures may change throughout the day. For updated road and weather information please call (865) 436-1200.  Once you hear a voice, dial extension 631 for road information or extension 630 for a weather forecast.  You may wish to write this number down when traveling to the area for handy reference for road and weather updates.
