way. We had issues with the Post Office concerning delivery problems. You should

Mountain Climbers Unhappy ASHFORD, Wash. (AP) – Mountain climbers aren’t happy
about a National Park Service proposal to boost the cost of a permit to climb Mount
Rainier by two-thirds and for Alaska’s Mount McKinley by 250 percent.The News
Tribune reports that Rainier park Superintendent Dave Uberuaga plans to propose to
the National Park Service that the fee for an annual Rainier climbing pass be
increased from $30 to as much as $50.The increase is needed to train climbing
rangers and other expenses, Uberuaga said. Future fee increases might be linked to
rises in the U.S. Consumer Price Index, he said.Three climbing activist groups
wrote to park service Director Jon Jarvis last week to protesting the increase and
a proposal to raise the climbing fee for Mount McKinley in Alaska’s Denali National
Park by 250 percent, from $200 to $500. More… This the National Park Service’s

The 50 for Tibet Highpoint Challange50 For Tibet, and its members referred to as
Team Highpoint, is a Denver based non-profit foundation dedicated to spreading
knowledge of the Chinese occupation of Tibet by climbing the highest point of
elevation in all 50 of the United States. Team Highpoint s goal is to raise funds
for Tibet. 100% of the money raised goes directly to The Rowell Fund for Tibet Team

Highpointers Foundation’s Silent Auction Ends October 8th…October 8th at 6 pm EDT
is the deadline for the 5th edition of the Highpointers Foundation Silent Auction.
They have raised $1,810 in two years with this revenue generating mechanism.This
time offering a signed copy of Reinhold Messner’s seminal work “All Fourteen 8,000
Meter peaks ” covering everything that made him famous, from his first solo ascents,
to his oxygen-free climbs of most of the 8,000ers. Messner, was of course, the first
to stand atop these 14 mountains, a feat that has only been duplicated not quite two
dozen times in the 24 years since.The color photography is stunning, and worth
viewing in and of itself, without reading Messner’s text.Please consider a bid on
this hard cover, large format book, a fineaddition to any mountaineering library.
Proceeds will continue our goal of helping the privately owned state highpoints. We
were able to assist Osceola County Iowa earlier this year in purchasing a wooded lot
adjacent to the highpoint, which is being developed for use as a campground by weary
highpointers passing by with both RV and tent

HP Events, Happenings, Info and Other Stuff…Panorama Point – Nebraska…The owner
of this highpoint requests that visitors stay on the lane and drive directly to and
from the highpoint. “Range Roving” with your vehicles is causing erosion problems
to the area. There can be late snows in spring so keep in mind, this road is not
plowed.Look for new signage and the the new information board provided by combined
efforts of the Highpointers Foundation and the Highpointers Club.Watch out for
Buffalo!*******Mount Katahdin – Maine…It is strongly suggested that you purchase
a Day Use Parking Reservation (DUPR)to guarantee your access to a Katahdin
trailhead as access trailhead parking is limited and the lots are often fully
reserved. Reserve a Parking Spot OnlineBy Phone: DUPR Reservation Line at (207)
723-3877. On September 7th the cut off time for using the day use reservation will
7:00. This change will be in effect for the remainder of the season.*******Granite
Peak – Montana & Gannet Peak – WyomingJackson Hole Mountain Guidesoffer club
members rates for climbing Granite and Gannett Peaks. Their group size is usually

route.*******Hawkeye Point – Iowa…The Point has gained greater exposure with the
newly completed Highway 60 four lane expressway through Osceola County. The
expressway is intended to redirect commercial traffic between Minneapolis and
Council Bluffs through northwest Iowa. Hawkeye Point is just one eight of a mile
from Highway 60 and just two miles from the Minnesota border. A museum is planned
for the crib if money becomes available.. Several Highpointers Club have donated
money. The Highpointers Foundation has contributed $4,000 to the project and
indivual Highpointers are getting their name on a Wall of Recognition for donating

District – Montana…The Beartooth Ranger District reminds visitors that the
district-wide Food Storage Order went into effect on April 1st. This order is in
effect from April 1 through November 20 on an annual basis, and applies to both the
Beartooth and Pryor Mountain Units.The order requires that any unattended food be
stored in a locked bear-resistantcontainer, stored in a closed vehicle, or
suspended at least 10 feet off the ground.Beartooth Ranger District has installed
bear resistant food storage boxes in developed recreation facilities around Red

Whitney Zonemust possess a valid wilderness permit. Permits are issued only at the

all use is regulated by limited entry quotas. Permits for the quota period may be
reserved in advance. Most permits for Mt. Whitney are reserved during the Mt.

Information, Conditions and Closures…Harney Peak – South Dakota”Lovely hike,
gorgeous views. Can be done via Sylvan Lake for a relatively short hike. For the
ambitious, it also be done from SW, Iron Creek Horse Camp Trailhead, or from N,
Willow Creek Horse Camp Trailhead, for longer hikes of about 12-14 miles.-

Boundry Peak – Nevada”Just got back from a week in the Sierra-Nevada. On Aug. 30th
I climbed Nevada’s Boundary Pk. and my permit for Mt. Whitney was for Sept. 1st and
2nd (I summited on the 2nd). My hike up Boundary was in about three inches of snow
after a freak storm. The weather for Whitney was spectacular as was the scenery.

had mention this before but maybe another note should be updated. I have not
personally seen them but this year I have had two more reports from fellow hikers
near and on (close to the rock cairn) CT’s highpoint of rattle snakes. Be cautious

Butte – North Dakota”Everything posted in the 9/2/2010 Highpointers Club e-Bulletin
is true. The “road” from the mailbox to the old farmhouse described in the
directions is pretty rough. Furthermore, it started raining as we were coming down,
and driving out the “road” became DANGEROUSLY SLIPPERY (and) was like driving on
grease!”- Highpointers Tom Beatini & Dina Scacchetti”Directions indicate
driving on the 2 wheel tread road for .7 miles at the mailbox FYI unless you
have a high clearance vehicle (and we had a small rental car) DO NOT take a low
slung car along that track the center has grass that is more than a foot high in
places and the car could either start a fire OR get stuck neither of which you

is no one living in the farm house described in Don Holmes’ guide book or on Summit
Post near White Butte. They do have a mailbox for donations to access the
highpoint. I don’t think the owners live on the land anymore. The number for the

Diane SpringerGranite Peak – Montana”If you’re planning to do the SW Couloir route
on Granite Peak MT this year (or any time you don’t have a good current condition
report), take an ice axe and crampons. The couloir is blocked with snow that would
be fairly easy to climb with ice axe and crampons, but bypassing it on the rocks to
the left involves about 30 feet of class-5 climbing. We made it without a rope, but
I wouldn’t want to do that again.”- Highpointer Bob Nungester (Posted on HP
Connector)Gannett Peak – Wyoming”Just a note to let you know that I successfully
summited Gannett Peak on Monday, July 26 at 2:15 pm. It was a steep and sometimes
scary climb, but the snow bridge on the bergschrund below the Gooseneck, although
narrow, was filled with a goodly amount of snow. It did get tedious, crampons on,
crampons off, etc., etc.”- Highpointer Bob KasparMount Elbert – Colorado”People
need to be aware of the south trail and the starting point. There has been
vandalism at the trailhead. There is also no markings for the trail from the ranger
road to where the trailhead is. We had the great opportunity to hike South Mt.
Elbert on 7/26/10 because I did not recognize this.”- Highpointer Greg
RickertHoosier Hill – Indiana”We just did Hoosier Hill on Monday (7-12-10). The
sign marking the turn off of the road is down. The sign post is still there though,

Arvon – Michigan”I visited this high point (Mount Arvon MI) on June 6. There are a
series of fairly high dirt berms in the road starting about 1/4 to 1/2 mile from
the high point. I think they are there to discourage vehicular traffic although I
was able to negotiate them with my AWD Ford Escape which has high clearance.
Prudence would dictate parking and walking the remaining route to avoid getting
high centered.” – Highpointer Mike Manson Henry Forks – Kings Peak – Utah “As Kings
Peak Liaisons, we would like to update highpointers who might be coming to Utah. We
summitted Kings Peak on Saturday, July 31st. Trail conditions were wet and muddy
from the beginning of the Henrys Fork Trailhead all the way to the summit. We
recommend waterproof boots and clothing. The washed out bridge at Elkhorn Crossing
has been replaced with three sturdy logs tied together for a reasonable crossing.
Mosquitoes were abundant but tolerable with bug spray. No water shortage for
purifying. Streams and lakes were full.. If anyone needs more information feel free
