Having three HPs to hit on this day I got to the Massie Gap trailhead early and did the round trip hike to the summit in about three hours. The drive from Black Mountain consisted of about 130 miles. The hike was very enjoyable especially when coming across the wild miniture horses which are really beautiful. The trail follows the AT past a shelter then shortly to the summit in the trees. While there I met a few other people, one man was also highpointing the same southern states. We said goodbye, goodluck, etc… never expecting to see him again. Well, five state highpoints and maybe a thousand miles later, when I was pulling up to the Florida HP, this same man was there taking photos of his last HP on his trip. Really an amazing coincidence concidering it was almost three days before that we were on Mt. Rogers with many variables in between and the time at the FL HP was quite short. At noon I returned to the parking lot and drove to my next state HP, Mt. Mitchell.
