Tennessee (GSMNP/Clingmans Dome):  A reminder from Highpointer Lee Price in Jamestown NC, US-441 (Newfound Gap Road) repaving between Collins Creek Picnic Area south to the boundary with Cherokee, NC is scheduled for March 16, 2009 through September 2010. 

Weather-related road and facility closures may change throughout the day. For updated road and weather information please call (865) 436-1200.  Once you hear a voice, dial extension 631 for road information or extension 630 for a weather forecast.  You may wish to write this number down when traveling to the area for handy reference for road and weather updates.

Highpointers at “The Adventure Summit”…

 The Adventure Summit is a joint production of Five Rivers Outdoors, the Outdoor Recreation Department of Five Rivers MetroParks and the Outdoor Resource Center of Wright State University and is an event celebrating the spirit of outdoor adventure by showcasing the vibrant lifestyle and culture of human powered endeavors through inspiration, education, and experience.

This is the area’s premiere outdoor adventure exposition that will focus attention on Dayton Ohio as the region’s emerging adventure capital of the Midwest.  The event is free and open to outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and interest levels.

The Adventure Summit will continue to serve the adventure market from skill clinics and hands on trainings from some of the world’s leading experts to showcasing local places to play and locals who have played around the world.  The Adventure Summit is committed to providing something for everyone from the armchair adventurer to the hard core enthusiast. Get Out & Live!

National PTSD Awareness Campaign Officially Kicked-Off at Campbell Hill, Ohio…

Summit for Soldiers - Campbell Hill OHOn January 17th, in Bellefontaine, Ohio, “Summit For Soldiers” launched a Nationwide Awareness Campaign that will visit the highest points of all 50 States to bring attention to a silent killer known as “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.”

The goals are to inform and educate veterans, families and communities on the facts about PTSD and the resources/treatments available to them. To work with military units along with the public to reduce the stigma associated with PTSD, encourage a safe, non-threatening environment for soldiers to seek attention, to promote programs and resources that provide “simplified” access for ALL of veterans and most importantly to make certain that all this information is reaching those who need it most, the troops.

The Highpointers Club at the 19th Annual Wilderness Wildlife Week™

Just a reminder… “Wilderness Week in Pigeon Forge” begins its 19th year on January 10-17, 2009, with a series of outdoor themed activities designed to connect visitors with the outdoor world of the Great Smoky Mountains.

The Highpointers Club will be there with a table and some lectures.  A great time to had by many.  Come by and visit.  If you would like to volunteer for some time at our table, just let us know at membership@highpointers.org.

We may have some special Club rates at lodging in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg as well.  Send me an email if interested in visiting this gathering.  I promise… you’ll really enjoy this event.

During Pigeon Forge Wilderness Week, nearly 100 experts on nature and the great outdoors will host walks, hikes, seminars and lectures on a wide variety of topics, including Smoky Mountain history and plant and animal life. A number of Wilderness Wildlife Week programs are designed for children.

Jack and Joyce Parsell Article…

There is an article that was published in the Sunday, December 14th edition of The Watertown Daily Times, (Watertown New York) featuring Highpointers Jack and Joyce Parsell.  Just about everyone that has been in the Club for a while know them both as “Charter Members.”

This article, written by Chris Brock, is a very nice and interesting read.

“Mr. Parsell is one of the original Highpointers, a national group formed in 1987 whose members strive to reach all the natural highest points in each state. The Watertown resident completed all 50 in 1989 with a trek up the 13,804-foot Gannett Peak in Wyoming, becoming the 10th person to reach all 50.

Highpointing Makes “GEICO direct” Magazine…

GEICO Direct Magazine Fall 2008There is a wonderful four page color layout about Highpointing in the “Fall 2008” issue of GEICO direct magazine. This issue comes in four regional variations which offer four different covers and two slightly different articles.

The article contains well orchestrated takes on highpointing and offers a mix-match of many links to several organizations, blogs, websites, while providing many tidbits of advice, information and references for additional information as well.

19th Annual Wildnerness Wildlife Week™ Pigeon Forge, Tennessee – January 10th-17th, 2009 (Updated)

While enjoying the 75th year of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park,  Wilderness Week in Pigeon Forge begins its 19th year on January 10-17, 2009, with a series of outdoor themed activities designed to connect visitors with the outdoor world of the Smokies.  The Highpointers Club will be there for it’s second year as well.
