After a most enjoyable Highpointers’Conference, the rental car and I headed east, to bag White Butte, and claim highpoint #48. In Bozman,MT I overnighted with my old Army buddy, Dick Corbin and the next morn we easily made the drive over to White Butte. We took Highway 12 out of Miles City, with the idea of connecting with 85North so we could avoid all the traffic in Amidon. But, to my sorrow, I learned that the only way to get to the trailhead, other than bushwacking overland, is through Amidon. We easily found the roads and farm and the $20 Fort Knox style mailbox for our contribution. And, it was a sunny and beautiful day on the summit. Lot of view. No snakes in sight. Good cold beer at the Amidon General Store after our climb. No, we did not see anyone else on the summit. Back in Seattle, with 2400 miles on the rental car, I got a raised eyebrow from the Hertz folks.
