Highpointers at Wildlife Wilderness Week – Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

January 12th 2008 started a new endeavor for The Highpointers Club with setting up a table representing The Highpointers Club and The Highpointers Foundation for it’s first three days. The table was manned by Jean Trousdale, Gary White, Craig & Mary Jane Noland.

Also visiting the table and giving several talks on subjects from Highpointing to the trails in the Smokies and onward, were Highpointers Bill & Rosemary Deitzer. They have been regulars at these gatherings promoting Highpointing and the great outdoors. My hat is off to the Deitzer’s for their undying efforts in promoting the goals of The Highpointers Club!!!

Wilderness Week in Pigeon Forge began it’s 18th annual gathering on January 12-19, 2008, with a series of outdoor themed activities designed to connect visitors with the outdoor world of the Great Smoky Mountains and other outdoor venues with nearly 100 experts on nature and the great outdoors with hosted walks, hikes, seminars and lectures on a wide variety of topics, including Smoky Mountain history and plant and animal life. Guided hikes through the Smokies range from easy, relaxed walks to more strenuous, multi-mile treks. Topics vary with individual hikes. A number of programs are designed for all ages and attracts thousands of nature lovers to the area from all over the United States. The International Festivals & Events Association has recognized Pigeon Forge Wilderness Week for its environmental and educational efforts.

I especially want to thank Butch Helton at the Pigeon Office of Special Events, the Highpointers Merc for the donation of several door prizes, John B. McCowen at Hampton Inn Pigeon Forge for giving us a special Highpointers Club rate for lodging as well as everyone involved as volunteers at this event. We’ll be there next year for the whole show!!! Volunteers to man our table, or if you would like to be a speaker on some outdoor / highpointing topic, contact me at cnoland@highpointers.org or drop me a note at the membership address.
