Highpointers 2009 Convention Schedule

Remember, we are constantly adjusting the schedule.

The 2009 Highpointer’s Convention will be headquartered at the Best Western at Hunt’s Landing, Matamoras, Pennsylvania (1-84, Exit 53). Registration and all major events will take place or begin at the host hotel.

Rooms can be booked by calling the Inn directly at (570) 491-2400. Highpointers will be afforded a weekday rate of $109.00 per room and a weekend rate of $114.00 per room. More information on the Best Western can be found at their web site www.bestwesternhuntslanding.com. although the highpointer room rate is not available online. There are also a number of other hotels, bed and breakfasts, and camping sites in the immediate vicinity.

4:00 pm – Kickoff Barbecue at Urbanski Farms – The Urbanski family hosts a barbecue at Urbanski Farms, Nuangola, Pennsylvania (1-81, Exit 159). All highpointers are invited to the NJ09 opening event. All highpointers are encouraged to camp out on the banks of the Little Wapwallopen Creek and participate in the East versus West Highpointer Softball Game. 4:15 am – Roger’s Excellent New York Adventure – Meet in the lobby to caravan to the Port Jervis Train Station for the trip to New York City aboard the 5:05 am Jersey Transit train. Plans include a visit to the Today Show audience in Rockefeller Center (subject to the show being taped in NYC that day), taking double decker open air Gray Line buses for a tour of Manhattan south of Central Park including the World Trade Center site and a climb of the Empire State Building. (7:45 am – For those not on the New York trip, the county highpointers under Mike Schwatz meet in the lobby of the Hunts Landing for a five hour county highpointing trip)

(8 am – Approximate start of caravan for those camping at Urbanski Farms for the 1 1/2 hour trip to the convention headquarters) (1 pm – Approximate time of return of county highpointers) (3:00 pm – Registration officially begins at Hunts Landing)

4:36 pm – New York trip boards Jersey Transit train at Penn Station to return to Port Jervis 6:55 pm – New York trip returns to Port Jervis

7:15 pm – Caravan leaves Hunts Landing Hotel for sunset at High Point. According to the park superintendent this will be the first time in the modern history of the park that the tower is left open for an event. There is no entrance fee on this trip.

Friday, July 31, 2009
7 am – Meet in Hunts Point lobby for 1 1/2 hour trip to the Gunks for rock climbing with Bill Urbanski

8:30 am – Gather in lobby of Hunts Landing for caravan for canoe trip down the Delaware River visiting the New York/New Jersey/Pennsylvania tri-point led by Steve Urbanski. Details: https://highpointers.org/?p=678 IMPORTANT NOTE: NEARLY 80 PEOPLE HAVE SIGNED UP SO DETAILS MAY CHANGE

(8:45 am – Gather in lobby for COUNTY HIGHPOINTERS TRIP to Warren County led by Michael Schwartz)

2 pm – Approximate return time from canoeing trip

3 pm – Seminars at Hunts Point Landing including 1) Climbing Denali, 2) Climbing the 48 highpoints, 3) How to use climbing equipment (seminars are free)

6 pm – Convention officially begins with evening social at the Hunts Point Landing patio overlooking the High Point monument. Beer, wine and soft drinks included in package.

Saturday, August 1, 2009
7 – 9 am – Pancake breakfast at Hunts Landing Hotel (included in convention package)

8 am – Approximate start of longer hike to High Point summit led by Pete Anderson (DETAILS FORTHCOMING)

8:45 am – County highpointers not going may pursue other highpoints (DETAILS FORTHCOMING) 10 am – Meet in lobby of Hunts Point for caravan to High Point 10:30 am – Climb of High Point (100 yards from parking lot).

11 am – Watermelon feast on summit 12:30 pm – Highpointers Foundation Board meeting at Hunts Landing Hotel

2 pm – Highpointers Club Board meeting at Hunts Landing 6 pm – Social cocktail hour at Hunts Landing (soft drinks are free/beer and liquor are cash bar)

7 pm – Banquet at Hunts Landing Hotel featuring a roast of Don Holmes author of the Highpoints of the United States.

Sunday, August 2, 2009

Morning – “‘Til Next Year Breakfast” – Bid your friends a fond farewell over a cappuccino in the Hunt’s Landing Dinning Room.

9am – Meet at Hunts Landing for post-convention trip led by Gary Szelc (DETAILS FORTHCOMING)
