Congratulations to the more than 700 Cops on Top who summited on June 25 in the Summit for Heroes on almost every highpoint in the country. This event includes several Highpointers including the founder Keith McPheeters of the Farmington New Mexico Police Department.

Congratulations Aron Ralston on the Best Picture and Best Actor Nominations for 127 Hours

Following the ordeal Aron completed all 50 states in 2005.

Florida Times-Union Article on Highpointers Shaw and Patricia McVeigh

The Jacksonsonville Florida Times-Union has a nice article on Highpointers Shaw and Patricia McVeigh entitled “For highpointers, reaching summit is the peak of joy” The article tells how they got interested.

As he tells it, he and Patricia were talking one night in 2006 and he remarked he needed more exercise. She agreed, but like most folks, recognizing their need for exercise didn’t result in actual exercise. The following year, he was in an outdoor shop and spied Paul L. Zumwalt’s book, “Fifty State Summits: Guide with Maps to State Highpoints. ”

That’s when it hit him that the best exercise could be one that had kept him fit more than 30 years earlier.

Vote for Highpointer Matt Moniz for National Geographic Adventurer of the Year

Vote for 12 Year Old Matt Moniz, who earlier this year did “All 50 Highpoints” in 42 days, as National Geographic’s People’s Choice Adventurer of the Year.

Highpointers Club Mentioned in New York Times article on Climbing Northeast Peaks

ny-times-2010-09The Highpointers Club is mentioned in a New York Times article on northeast peaks (headlined “6 Days, 6 States, 6 Peaks” by Mark Aiken). The article appeared on the Times wire on September 2, 2010. The article says, ” Jerimoth is barely even a hill, although the Highpointers, who are dedicated to climbing all 50 high points in the United States, have been known to decorate the high point with Himalayan prayer flags à la Everest.

Member Larry Floyd Writes Book on Oklahoma Trails

Highpointer Larry Floyd and his friend and Kent Frates have written a book on hiking trails in Oklahoma. The book lists 58 trailheads. Their favorite hike is Black Mesa with Charons Garden in the Wichita Mountains a close second.

127 Hours – Movie About Member Aron Ralston To Premiere Oct. 28


127 Hours, a film by Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle, is scheduled to premiere Oct. 10 at the 54th BFI London Film Festival depicts Aron Ralston’s 2003 ordeal in Blue John Canyon near Moab, Utah, in which he freed himself by cutting his arm off.

The London premiere will be the last movie of the festival — the festival most prestigious position and where Slumdog premiered. James Franco is portraying Ralston.

Ralston was a club member at the time and went on to complete all 50 states.

12-Year-Old Matt Moniz Completes in 43 days, 3 hours, 51 minutes and 9 seconds

12-year-old Matt Moniz has completed on Mauna Kea hiking 50 summits in 43 days, 3 hours, 51 minutes and 9 seconds.

He set out to do 50 summits in 50 days or less. He is doing this before entering the seventh grade in his home of Boulder, Colorado this fall. He only has Mauna Kea left.
