We (three old grandpas) got a late start to Vermont, arriving too late to take the Long Trail, and opted for the Toll road. It closed at 4 pm and chases people out of the area so no one stay longer than 5. We arrived at 3:55 and ended up taking the gondola and the Cliff trail. We barely made the gondola which closes at 5 pm, and then went around the back of the facility to the Cliff trail (.8 miles and roughly 800 ft gain). We took the Profanity/Long Trail down. If I were to do it again, I would prefer to do it in reverse. The short gain coupled with the long descent really did a number on our knees.
The Cliff trail was great fun, challenging and in our case safe because it was dry (we would have turned back if it had been wet, as the rock was very slick in the areas where it was wet on our descent) and shaded in the pm.
It was a great view, fine weather, and I suppose because of the huge quantities of summitters we found no log or sign post other than the geo marker.
