Lorrie Krontz, Chris Quoyeser, AlphaGraphics Team, Shelby Arnold and Matthew Padilla receive Paul Zumwalt Awards at the Tennessee 2014 Highpointers Convention. Below are their nominations:

John Mitchler has nominated the following candidates and here are his comments:

This past year, the Jack Longacre Memorial project was officially completed with the transfer of the land to a new owner, Tom Altwies. Many Club members were involved in the creation of “Jakk’s Glade,” as well as the solution for permanent ownership & access, and through it all, the daughter of Jack Longacre, Lorrie Krontz, supported the Club’s efforts. I recommend she be recognized by the HPC Board for her crucial support which made this venture possible.

The Club’s newsletter, Apex to Zenith, is an important communication tool which links members and shares their highpointing stories and accomplishments. We’ve had years of good service from Barnum Printing in Denver, Colorado, however, they could no longer perform our type of printing. So we had to scramble to find a new printer, and one was found in AlphaGraphics in Golden, Colorado. This company has worked very closely with us and has provided a superior quality newsletter each quarter for the past year, in a timely fashion, and at a competitive price. I request the HPC Board recognize Chris Quoyeser for managing our account, and the entire AlphaGraphics Team for their professional approach to printing and mailing our newsletter.

Dave Covill has nominated the following candidates and here are his comments:

Like her predecessors Chris Case and Sarah Wood, Shelby Arnold runs the Brad Washburn American Mountaineering Museum in Golden CO. She oversees the US State Highpoints touch screen exhibit at the museum, and has discussed efforts to make improvements, to create a small stand-alone highpoints exhibit of tangible artifacts, and to improve the theater selection with a film on state highpointing. Shelby provides discounted admission to highpointers who visit the Museum.

Matthew Padilla works for the Black Hills District of the USFS in South Dakota. Matt is in charge of maintaining the stone tower atop Harney Peak, as well as the trails leading to it. For several years he has spearheaded a project to record the history of the tower and peak, researching countless old newspaper and magazine articles. He is coordinating an effort to restore the stone tower to its former condition. He regularly hikes to the peak to oversee stonemason work. He frequently hikes it in winter to check on it. His title is Archaeological Ranger, and he oversees all efforts to document ancient ones in the Wilderness. His enthusiasm for his work is legendary amongst ranger circles.
