Malcolm Whitney Stebbins, Leslie Skellenger, Tani Livick and Rhonda Bateman received Paul Zumwalt Awards at the 2013 Convention.
Here’s their nominations:
*Karin Harmon
For years Karin has been the driving force behind Friends of Kings Peak, a non-profit entity based in Heber City UT that works to make the experience a more pleasurable one at the UT state highpoint. Karin coordinates trail work, sign placement, kiosk and bench and picnic table placement, and other deeds that go un-noticed by the average hiker. She has worked closely with Stony Burk and the Highpointers Foundation folks to get new signs installed to replace older destroyed signs or non-existent ones so that trail junctions can be easily identified and a good decision made. Karin also serves as a Liaison between the public and the USFS which administers this highpoint, and has helped to gain permission to do improvements on federal land. If every federally owned state highpoint had a Karin Harmon and her team behind her, the hobby would be much the better off.
*Malcolm Whitney Stebbins
I nominate Malcolm Whitney Stebbins for the Paul Zumwalt Award for his tremendous contribution related to the A. H. Marshall diary which was donated in 2012 from the Stebbins estate to the Mazamas. For his part, Malcolm digitally photographed all 2,475 pages of the 4 volume diary so that it could be posted on_line for everyone to read. This pain_staking effort resulted in four books, 1886_1931, 1931_1938, 1938_1944, and 1945_1950. These efforts are described on page 26 of issue #98 (12_Q3) of the Highpointers Club newsletter. Such a dedicated effort on Malcolm’s part is appreciated by the Club’s members and we thank him for that.
*Leslie Skellenger
I nominate Leslie Skellenger for ensuring a successful event during the Oregon 2012 Convention. Leslie is Manager of the Ice Axe Grill at the Mt Hood Brewery, and she worked closely with the Convention Chair, John Mitchler, to plan the Thursday evening “ice breaker” gathering at the Brewery. She added more staff to accommodate the overflow attendance, and dedicated the venue to the Highpointers Club that evening. For her crucial collaboration, the Highpointers Club thanks Leslie.
*Tani Livick and Rhonda Bateman
We jointly nominate Tani Livick and Rhonda Bateman of Timberline Lodge at Mt Hood, Oregon, for their efforts to make things go smoothly during the Oregon 2012 Convention, by working closely with the Convention Chair John Mitchler, the Club’s climbing coordinator Dave Covill, as well as the many attendees who used their services. Tani Livick is Mountain Administrator for Timberline Lodge, and she coordinated the snowcat reservations with attendees and even added extra days to their normal 3_day_per_week schedule to accommodate the extra traffic during convention week. Rhonda Bateman is Photo Shoot Coordinator for Timberline Lodge. The Highpointers Club appreciates their extra effort and thanks them.
